On behalf of the Chabad Center of Sudbury we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Elliot Winer who passed away yesterday. Elliot was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and passed away surrounded by his family who he loved so dearly after a short illness.
On a personal note, Elliot was a close family friend and an avid supporter and participant of Chabad programs and events all the way since 2006. Over the years Elliot and his wife Susan, who were also our neighbors in Sudbury, became very close to us in so many ways. Whether it was celebrating almost every Passover & Rosh Hashanah Dinner together as well as many Shabbat dinners, Elliot enjoying and participating in countless courses and classes, or Elliot participating in countless other programs and prayer services, Elliot became a mainstay and an integral part of our community and personal life here in Sudbury.
Elliot was soft spoken and unassuming, but beneath the humble Elliot, was a deep spirited, intelligent and accomplished person, who besides being a great economist, an avid sports player, and a deep and inquisitive person, was also deeply connected to his Jewish heritage and values which he cherished so dearly.
I clearly remember our very first JLI Course in Sudbury which took place at the Hotel on Route 20 in 2006 and Elliot being one of the seven course participants. This was to be the first of many classes, courses and more which Elliot would participate in and add to in his own unique way. Elliot loved to learn and explore Jewish traditions, values and history and it was easy to tell by the questions he asked, that he cared deeply about these things.
In recent years Elliot began joining us on Shabbat for the services and quickly became good friends with many of the congregants who always enjoyed chatting and hearing from Elliot.
In fact, just a few weeks ago, even though Elliot was fighting a grueling battle with cancer, on the date of his father’s Yahrziet, Elliot decided to walk to Chabad to join us for the Shabbat Services so that he could say Kaddish for his father and honor his memory. Elliot’s determination in honoring his parents and loved ones, was a true inspiration to all of us who were there that day and were a consistent part of what Elliot stood for throughout his life.
Elliot was a friend, who we just enjoyed seeing on our walks in the neighborhood or chatting together on his lawn, or seeing him cut his grass. Every member of our family knew him well and on a first name basis and prayed for him during these last few difficult months. My children would make sure to remind Shayna to mention his name as she lit Shabbat candles each week and to me, they would remind to say the prayer for those who need healing when we would read the Torah each week.
We had many heart to heart and deep conversations over the last few months and I will treasure and remember these conversations forever. His sincerity, love for his family and strong attachment to his Jewish core were always present as he fought to continue living and make the most of each and every day of his life.
Elliot, you will be missed but not forgotten.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Susan and to his children, Rachel and her spouse John and their children, and to Jed. May they all be comforted among the mourners of Zion & Jerusalem and may Elliot’s memory be a blessing.
Elliot will be interred in Seattle, Washington.
In loving memory of Avraham Ben Michoel Hakohen Winer Z”L
