Passing of Rabbi Yaakov Lazaros

Rabbi Yaakov Lazaros, who directed and ran Chabad of Framingham for close to 48 years, passed away this morning surrounded by his family.

Rabbi Lazaros was a deeply spiritual and genuine person and Rabbi and a devoted husband, father of seven children and many grandchildren.

On Thursday I sat across the table from him in his synagogue and we chatted, never did I imagine that within 36 hours he would pass away.

In our early years in Sudbury before we started our own services, I would walk the 4+ mile walk each Shabbos to be a part of the Minyan, and during that time, I had the honor to get to know this silent and gentle spiritual giant, who had impacted so many hundreds of lives in such a meaningful and deep way.

Rabbi Lazaros had a love for studying Torah and in this picture I took several years ago, he was concluding a tractate of Talmud on the day before Passover, making a Siyum.

On Thursday, Rabbi Lazaros told me that he is up to page 96 in the tractate of Sanhedrin, but is finding it harder to concentrate although he wants to finish it.

In that conversation, Rabbi Lazaros was very open with me about what lay ahead, and his humility, simplicity, greatness and sincerity were all on display in full force. I couldn't talk for a few minutes in the conversation as I was so overcome and couldn't stop thinking about it since then.

Rabbi Lazaros was born in Germany to Holocaust survivors, and led a authentic and proud Jewish life, that brought Judaism and meaning to so many, in the Framingham area and well beyond.

Rabbi Lazaros, your unique light will be missed, you are leaving behind a beautiful family and so many people you impacted so deeply, who are all devastated by your loss.

To your dear family, may G-d comfort you all.

Leilui Nishmas, Rabbi Yaakov Noach Ben Mordechai Tzvi Z"L

Hearing the Birds Chirping & Month of Healing

Bracha Sassonikin from Metulla, Israel, right on the border of Lebanon, described to me this morning the new sounds they are hearing this morning of the birds chirping, the trees blowing in the wind and the sound of quiet that has settled in.

I asked her and others in the border towns of northern Israel what do they feel now?

She told me that what keeps her going is quote a father always told her in Yiddish, "Mir Darf Farshteyen, as men Farsheteyt Gornisht, ober der Aibisheter vet Helfen", meaning, "we need to understand that we don't understand anything, but G-d will help".

After a few very challenging few months for her and so many others who have stayed put despite the daily missiles, anti tank missiles, cluster bombs and more, they have been hoping and praying for a decisive end to the terrorism from across the border.

Today they have a lot of questions and things they don't understand, but they are as always full of resilience, hope, and faith that things will work out and G-d willing be much better no matter what happens.

Today & tomorrow we mark Rosh Chodesh Iyar, the month whose letters of the name, famously are referred to as an acronym for the words of the verse, "Ani Hashem Rofecha", "I am G-d your healer".

Indeed, may this new month of Iyar bring Israel and all of us everywhere the blessings of healing and hope which we all need.

Tomorrow we read the portion of Tazria & Metzora, which discusses the skin condition known as Tzaraat which would afflict people, and our sages say, was spiritually linked to negative gossip and slander of others.

Once diagnosed the person had to go out of the camp or city and be alone for a week, as they contemplated the negative impact of their gossip and reflected on how to use their voice for the good and positivity going forward.

Yet during this time, the person was considered to be ritually impure in a very severe way, and whose actions had brought an intensity of death.

Ironically, the name of the portion which discusses this condition, is called Tazria, to conceive, as it discusses some of the laws and Mitzvot surrounding birth, even as most of the portion speaks of this terrible impurity and negativity.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe would point out, that the name of the portion, Tazria, Conceive, is actually the message of the purpose of this entire process, it was to become something better in the process, to have a new positive outlook on life and become a new kind of person through this process. So while the actual experience was negative, what resulted at the end was a much healthier moral person who used their tongue for the good and to build the world and society.

As we begin to celebrate this month of Iyar, the month of healing, we pray and hope that despite all the challenges and negativity of the last few months, we are able to move forward and create a better world with blessings for Israel and blessings for all of us everywhere, so that we create a new and much better reality going forward.

Shabbat Shalom & Good Shabbos

Yisroel

Artemis

<img height="162" src="https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/meips/ADKq_Nap0odHKrYBkN5TPQF1psT9hOsi8XBFzPDMHBYhOEtXjKTEN8ki4mrEc6bcYtHnSaGKBtIYeVuERnkxmM2lBQu2n6_M78XopDNDgNXrm9V_1I5tGSJu=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.ChabadSudbury.com/media/images/1365/hkNd13656772.png" width="300" a6t"="" data-bit="iit" tabindex="0" real_width="392" real_height="212" align="left" alt="" />As we were celebrating a beautiful Passover here in Sudbury, the historic mission of Artemis II mission was launched which has carried four crew members farther from Earth than any human has ever traveled, looping around the moon and now returning home, for a total distance of 252,756 miles.

While there have been creative images shared with me, of images of the Chabad of the dark side of the Moon, this journey is one of tremendous meaning and inspiration on so many levels.

When the Apollo 8 mission first orbited the moon in 1968, the Lubavitcher Rebbe reflected on several powerful lessons. One of the ideas which he shared was how rockets rely on massive fuel tanks, but once their job is done, those tanks are released. What once propelled them forward would otherwise hold them back and slow them down.

So too in our lives. We grow, we evolve, and sometimes what once fueled us can become a burden. Real growth means knowing what to hold onto and what to let go.

The path of Artemis II traces a graceful figure eight, using the moon’s pull and Earth’s gravity to guide it precisely home, no extra fuel required.

G-d charts our journey. He places within our lives the exact tools and strengths we need, at the exact moment we need them to max out the opportunities and challenges that lay before us. Our task is to trust, and learn to use them and to remember that even the sky is not the limit.

The greatest discoveries and opportunities await us in our journeys, as we remember the Divine power invested in each one of us individually, collectively as the Jewish people, and globally as humanity, we can remember that the best growth and opportunities for good for the world, are within reach, as we continue to push forward on our individual and collective journeys.

Wishing the Atremis Crew a safe landing!

Shabbat Shalom & Good Shabbos
Passover Photos, Updates & Message

Dear Friends,

<img height="226" src="https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/meips/ADKq_NbUr2s9Pzf7x8MBADfJHJlJS9vqU_8lfHDfMEUEjcFE6h1nrIYI1vqr1dcxz49Gu1eE1NalwW6F5lLnLP_iYGl6NUwLUT8Xb2wWnox0HjOAE_qb_4o6=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.ChabadSudbury.com/media/images/1365/VmGP13651840.jpg" width="300" a6t"="" data-bit="iit" tabindex="0" real_width="300" real_height="226" align="left" alt="" />In just a few hours we will all be sitting around the Seder Tables with our loved ones, friends, and community, and at Chabad with 80 participants at the community Seder this evening.

The messages of Passover with its timeless message of faith, hope, resilience and miracles, is as relevant as ever.

As our friends and family in Israel found ways to celebrate the Passover Seder in between sirens, braving walks to neighbors, sirens midway in the four questions, but surely with a determination as they said the prayer of Vehee SheAmda, in each generation they rise up to destroy us.

Now more than ever, we need to take the time on Passover to count the miracles and blessings that have been happening, even as we simultaneously pray for healing, peace, unity and more.

Besides sending support to communities helping the vulnerable this Passover in Israel, supporting heroes and their families and community Seders in bomb shelters, our community has also done so much locally.

With the efforts of so many, hundreds have been visited, reached, and brought hand delivered Passover joy to their doors in the form of Passover Packages and Dinners and more!

<img height="226" src="https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/meips/ADKq_NZ7yUum1o46ESDyeuOL3gnYcmKFYOEwgtcg2HYXdgtomCJU38NXKoBCv19hCVwQbrKqw0sIpxaLwupm01N2mL7sa_2IrtowcN5jJSfgxG1gniiPd8bt=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.chabadsudbury.com/media/images/1365/TUPv13650032.jpg" width="300" a6t"="" data-bit="iit" tabindex="0" real_width="300" real_height="226" align="left" alt="" />As we open the doors for Elijah this evening as we sit at our Seders, let us pray for us to overcome the many challenges we are facing right now, and help usher in a time of goodness for the world, with no war or fighting, of real peace between people, and a time of growth, goodness and unity for the world.

<img height="398" src="https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/meips/ADKq_NaWLDqJ6wxKpArYGoy22Zcl4XfikJrKne8oG_PrU1tuG81oC8uIFo5DSAPk53VM9r4yd2Y58TcuhxzJdNFo2q_ODv5Z8nybpeeztLvPSuv7GkAVFh1S=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.ChabadSudbury.com/media/images/1365/RNxw13651841.jpg" width="300" a6t"="" data-bit="iit" tabindex="0" real_width="300" real_height="398" align="left" alt="" />Hundreds have already enjoyed a fun Holiday Program or Holiday Visit, including at the Sunday School programs, the Model Matzah Bakery event, the home visits and events, and more, and lots more similar events and efforts will continue over the coming days for all ages, as we bring holiday joy to as many as possible and share programs such as the Model Matzah Bakery with other congregations and communities.

Thank you to the many volunteers who have been helping with the Passover Dinner Project and the Passover Joy Packages!

With your help hundreds of homes have received a beautiful Passover Package with handmade Shmurah Matzah, wine, gifts for the kids, a guide and more.

In addition, yesterday nearly 70 people received a Catered Passover Dinner delivered to their door by volunteers, who helped bring the Passover joys to the homebound, seniors and others who it would make a difference to.

The feedback has been tremendous, from tears to emotional thanks, and so much more!

<img height="398" src="https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/meips/ADKq_NZqNi6U2Sq8ZkruoKxfq8hujyLe_tplAXim9Z30vgwQ7ebPtlCP4-jP1jE8WznyH5JMWEwZ9UX5jsLGiBMU0aDS0-FjvtNt7_fQHW8gzCBRbcrj_EqM=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.chabadsudbury.com/media/images/1365/bJDx13651843.jpg" width="300" a6t"="" data-bit="iit" tabindex="0" real_width="300" real_height="398" align="left" alt="" />Of course over Passover and beforehand, we will have volunteers who will be visiting and running programs and Seders in multiple local nursing homes and senior living facilities.

Please consider supporting these efforts and helping us bring and share the joy and messages of this important holiday to as many as possible, through these visits, as well as the many other community programs which we are running and hosting.

Donate Today to share Passover Joy with others.

Thank you to everyone else who has been helping out with setup, shopping, schelpping, fixing things, landscaping, security and so much more!

In addition to the work we are doing locally right here in our area, if you would like to help support the many we have been helping as a community literally in the frontlines and elsewhere as they prepare for Passover, under fire, you may do so over here.

Thank you for your consideration & support!

Please join us for the holiday services over the next few days at Chabad of Sudbury with daily services and a luncheon which follows, tomorrow through Saturday, at 10am - 12pm followed by the luncheon.

Our best wishes for a Joyous & Healthy Passover to you and your family.

Hundreds Enjoy Model Matzah Bakeries

In the days leading up to Passover, hundreds of children have enjoyed Model Matzah Bakery events that Chabad of Sudbury has hosted right here in Sudbury and in Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley and the New England Hebrew Academy in Brookline.

Dressed in bakers hats and aprons, the children help remove the grain from the wheat, as they learn the story of Passover, and then proceed to grind the grains, make flour, and make a dough and then shape and roll a Matzah, and punch lots of holes in it before they bake their very own Matzah.

My Parents House was Egged!

My parents in London, UK, woke up Sunday Morning to discover that eggs had been thrown all over their house. Pretty much every window and part of the house had been egged, and of course their cars too.

The Police and the Jewish Community Security Trust were over there on Sunday morning going over footage and got a good look at the four teens who were surveying the house at 2:30am in the morning, before egging it.

Their beautiful large Mezuzah on their door may have been an added attraction for the teens to egg the house and especially all over the door, but although it is assumed to be the case, it is not yet confirmed.

Thankfully, my wonderful nephew Levi, managed to power wash everything and by Sunday afternoon it was all gone.

While eggs all over your front doors are not fun, it does remind us of another story we read about at this time of year, the anniversary of which was yesterday.

3,300 years ago, the Jewish people were in their last weeks of bondage in Egypt, where they were told that on the first day of Nissan, they were to take a lamb on the tenth of the month and then offer it as a Passover Sacrifice a few days later, and then finally, mark the doorpost of the house with some of the blood of the sacrifice.

Passover is named after this very act, as the Torah tells us that G-d passed over the homes of the Jewish people during the plague of the death of the firstborn, for which they had been told to mark their doors with the blood of the sacrifice, so that they would be passed over.

There are many layers to this story, but one of the most important elements in it is so relevant to today and even to the egging!

We know that the Egyptians who were persecuting the Jewish people, worshiped the lambs and sheep. So when the Jews were told to take the lamb and hold it for a few days before sacrificing it, they were initially scared and very daunted at the thought, thinking that certainly the Egyptians are going to attack them even more, as they were sacrificing something which they worshiped.

Yet, we are told that the opposite occurred, and instead the persecutors panicked and turned on the king, as they begged and then fought with him, to let the Jewish people leave.

The mark of blood on the Jewish doorposts, was a testimony to the fact that the Jewish people, were willing to listen to G-d, stay true to their values and principles, even though it may have come with a risk. It was the ultimate Purple Heart, a symbol of the tenacity and enduring strength of the people in doing what they needed to do in life regardless of the fear of antisemitism that may have come with these acts.

So yes, in 2026 even with a couple of eggs at your door, the Mezuzah and its message of Divine Protection and of our own loyalty and pride in our Judaism and its values, will be displayed stronger than ever, as it serves as a reminder to each one of us to carry and wear our Judaism wherever we go with the pride, actions and strength that it deserves!

Just in the last week, I think of the wonderful neighbors of our own in Sudbury, who have stopped us on the street to share their care, one of them even bought us dinner from Rami's one night, just to show a bit of love and care, at a time that they know has been intense.

Carry your Judaism with pride, act on it, never lower your head, do another Mitzvah, and hang those Mezuzahs proud and beautifully!

If anyone would like assistance in installing a Mezuzah on your front door or office, please let us know and we would be happy to coordinate a time.

Shabbat Shalom & Good Shabbos

Why did she Refuse Payment?

The young lady on the phone with me in Tel Aviv was helping prepare the orders of toys in between the sirens. Finally it was time to pay and the lady refused to take the payment for the delivery charge. I asked her to let us pay, but she responded, "no, this is so moving, I would like to do my part for this too".

I never met the lady, I don't even know her name, but she loved the fact, that a community across the world, was trying to help young Israeli children running in and out of bomb shelters, and told us how touched she was and wanted to be a part of this.

VaYakhel, is the them of the weekly portion, as Moshe gathers together the Jewish people, and conveys to them many important instructions and ideas. Vayakhel, means gathering together, bringing together, unifying the people, revealing what is beneath the surface of all of us, and finding a way to make that intrinsic connection come to the forefront of our existence.

For over forty years, the Lubavitcher Rebbe would speak each Shabbat and then edit his talks to be published. The very last talk that the Rebbe began to edit before he had his stroke was his message on the portion of Vayakhel, and the theme and emphasis was all about unity and overcoming differences.

Today more than ever, in a world that has fractured and ruptured relationships on many levels, with wars raging in Israel and elsewhere, and with antisemitic threats seeking to cause chaos, our seeking to strengthen our unity and connecting in meaningful ways, despite potential differences, is the tool we have at our disposal to trigger blessings that bring strength, clarity and blessings to the world.

Over Purim, we had people at our events with family members in Iran, and others with family members in Israel. Yet we all know that we are all connected.

The lady in the store in Tel Aviv knew that, and everyone here who has sought to make a difference to others locally and for those in Israel over the last few weeks, know that.

In the weeks that come, as we prepare for Passover, the holiday of Freedom, we plan on redoubling our efforts to connect, touch and make a difference to others, locally in a very big way so that everyone feels connected to the Jewish community, and that everyone can have a touch of joy of Passover, and also for what we do for Israel and others, we will continue to do our part as a community, to make a positive difference and bring some holiday joy to as many as possible.

With blessings for an uplifting and peaceful Shabbat Shalom & Good Shabbos.

Purim Recap among the Challenges

There is so much happening in the world right now, our brothers and sisters are under intense missile fire from multiple fronts, our family members and friends are in shelters, and Israel and the US are at war with Iran and its proxies.

A young employee of Sudbury Police who serves in the US Armed Forces was injured and we pray for his recovery, as we pray for this to end soon, and for an end to evil, and true peace between all people.

Yet, here in Sudbury, how do we celebrate Purim with so much happening and so much pain and concern?

Yet more than ever, Purim and its profound message of salvation from evil decrees, and for a quick turnaround from crazy situations, along with its message of the Jewish people's strengthening and alignment with their faith and values, is an enduring message for us to connect with.

We received messages from family, friends and frontline heroes, asking us and thanking us for carrying on and celebrating the messages of this holiday, even as it is challenging for so many.

One Couple's Powerful Story

In this week's portion we read about the kindling of the flames of the Menorah, also representing the soul of man, which is the flame of G-d.

Please read this powerful article below from the daughter of Natan Sharansky, which tells in a most powerful way, the story of just how powerful a soul can be, and how much light it can add.

*Message from Rachel Sharansky Danziger*…

Forty years ago today, my father, *Natan Sharansky*, crossed Glienicke Bridge and stepped into the free world. On that same day, he was reunited with my mother, Avital Sharansky, in a small room in an airport in Frankfurt after 12 years of forced separation, boarded a plane to Israel, landed into a national celebration, and finished his day at the Western Wall, praying from the Psalm Book my mother sent him just before his arrest --- the same Psalm book he used to expand his Hebrew and break the walls of loneliness in the Gulag.

That evening, my mother told us, felt like the end of one long day; a day that started 12 years earlier when she boarded a morning flight from Moscow to the free world, carrying nothing but a small purse, her Ketubah, and the hope that my dad would be allowed to leave the USSR and join her within a few short months.

That hoped-for short separation stretched into first one year and then another and another, birthdays and holidays and big life events spent apart over and over again, until in *March 1977* my father was arrested by the KGB, falsely accused of espionage and treason, and sentenced to many years in prison.

The seemingly never-ending day that started with my parents' tearful goodbye in Moscow lasted another nine years, during which my mother never rested, never stopped fighting, never gave up hope. And her struggle --- the struggle where the Jews of the world came together to fight for their brethren--- bore fruit, finally bringing that long long day to a close. My mother landed in Israel with my father as the sun set *40 years ago today,* and walked out into the cheering crowds under the night sky.

Yesterday we gathered as a family to mark this anniversary, as we do every year. As usual, my father wore the special Kippah a fellow inmate made for him in prison. As usual, the children asked questions and my parents answered. But this time, my father prepared old videos to share with us - rare footage of his activism within the USSR, recorded and smuggled out of Moscow by British journalists; archival footage of my mother marching in rallies and speaking to statesmen during the struggle for Soviet Jewry; my parents' cheerful interview with Good Morning America five days after my father's release, where my father answered the serious question of the interviewer about the difficulties of reunion and freedom with a happy "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there are no difficulties at all!" But to me, the most poignant video was a footage of my mother, young and gorgeous and exhausted, riding in a car between engagements in the US. "What are you fighting for," an unseen person asked her in that video. "I have big plans," she answered, and you can tell how deeply tired she was by the tone of her voice, but also how very determined. "I want to start our family in Israel. I want to have children. I want to send them to school in the morning and feed them. These are big plans aren't they? And I want my husband there so they can come true."

I looked around at all of us, gathered together to celebrate, looking at the screen together. I looked at my sister and myself, at our children, and I saw the fulfillment of my mother's dreams. For many years, quite a few people thought my mother's dream - simple and domestic as it was - would never be fulfilled. They watched her with pity, cried for the family she will never have, and supported her anyway, despite their own sense of hopelessness. I am deeply grateful to those people for joining a fight they deemed unwinnable. But the very fact that I exist, that my sister exists, that our children exist, means that I don't have to make the same choice as them, the choice to fight despite a sense of hopelessness. Because when I feel hopeless, I know, I KNOW, that impossible odds can be beat and impossible fights can be won. I know it in my bones, in my breaths, in the marrow of my very existence.

And so I know that just because a fight SEEMS hopeless, hope is never wrong.

*And as the kids laughed and played around us, free and happy and confident despite war and threats and trauma, I realized that all of us here in Israel have access to the same deep certainty. All of us are the fulfillment of dreams that seemed impossible for millennia.*

And so, when we feel despair and dread and anxiety, all we need to do is look at ourselves in the mirror and remember:

*Our very life proves that impossible things are actually possible. So let us not let go of hope.*

-------------------------

Shabbat Shalom & Happy Purim!!

Yisroel

In the book "Happiest Man on Earth", Eddi Jaku who lived through the horrors of Buchenwald and Auschwitz, writes "I promised when I came out of the darkest hours of my life that I would be happy for the rest of my life and smile, because if you smile, the world smiles with you".

He also wrote "Happiness is the only thing in the world that doubles each time you share it".

Happiness & Joy are a crucial part of life and are emphasized tremendously in Jewish teachings, including in verses in the Torah, Talmudic teachings and especially emphasized in Chassidic teachings.

"Joy breaks all barriers." - Source Fourth Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer

"Think good, and it will be good." - Source Tzemach Tzedek

"Serve God with joy" - Book of Psalms

“G‑d is your shadow at your right hand,” are words from the Book of Psalms. The Baal Shem Tov explained that just as shadows mimic our actions, G‑d reciprocates our actions measure for measure, including with when we feel joy, G‑d gives us more joy.

This Shabbat we are blessing the month of Adar, a joyous and happy month and one in which we seek to increase in joy.

Joy is only one part of happiness, and obviously there are multiple levels, but seeking to connect with the blessings and gratitude of life and celebrating all the good, along with a healthy dose of humility, are excellent ingredients to help frame our mindset with some joy.

Sharing this joy and positivity with others around us, is something that helps break down barriers and overcome challenges.

It doesn't mean that there are no issues, pain and negativity in our world, but finding a way to focus on blessings and increasing happiness in the world around us, is also a good to way to lift up the spirits and increase the blessings for so many that come with positivity.

Shabbat Shalom & Happy Month of Adar
