This past week we have witnessed an unfathomable human catastrophe in Haiti. The death, destruction, lack of help, and cries of desperation which are unable to be answered quick enough are chilling and mind blowing. The scale of this tragedy is huge and it will take a long time to fix. But in the interim the next few days are critical in saving lives, getting medical help to the wounded, extracting victims, and ensuring clean water and supplies. Here is an article that a colleague wrote regarding this event which ties in to the weekly Torah readings. There is no organized Jewish community in Haiti, but there is the Dominican Republic. The Chabad Center in the Dominican Republic has become active in helping the Haiti situation, the Chabad Rabbi has gone into Haiti as of last night to help relief efforts, and several other volunteers were flown in to help too. You can read more about their work here, and here for another article. American joint Distribution Committee Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, and we hope and pray the the rescue teams will be able to save as many lives as possible. With best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Yisroel Freeman |
