Passing of Rabbi Yaakov Lazaros

1000390683.jpgRabbi Yaakov Lazaros, who directed and ran Chabad of Framingham for close to 48 years, passed away this morning surrounded by his family.

Rabbi Lazaros was a deeply spiritual and genuine person and Rabbi and a devoted husband, father of seven children and many grandchildren.

On Thursday I sat across the table from him in his synagogue and we chatted, never did I imagine that within 36 hours he would pass away.

In our early years in Sudbury before we started our own services, I would walk the 4+ mile walk each Shabbos to be a part of the Minyan, and during that time, I had the honor to get to know this silent and gentle spiritual giant, who had impacted so many hundreds of lives in such a meaningful and deep way.

Hearing the Birds Chirping & Month of Healing

PXL_20260415_132417752.jpgBracha Sassonikin from Metulla, Israel, right on the border of Lebanon, described to me this morning the new sounds they are hearing this morning of the birds chirping, the trees blowing in the wind and the sound of quiet that has settled in.

I asked her and others in the border towns of northern Israel what do they feel now?

She told me that what keeps her going is quote a father always told her in Yiddish, "Mir Darf Farshteyen, as men Farsheteyt Gornisht, ober der Aibisheter vet Helfen", meaning, "we need to understand that we don't understand anything, but G-d will help".

After a few very challenging few months for her and so many others who have stayed put despite the daily missiles, anti tank missiles, cluste… Read More »

Artemis

As we were celebrating a beautiful Passover here in Sudbury, the historic mission of Artemis II mission was launched which has carried four crew members farther from Earth than any human has ever traveled, looping around the moon and now returning home, for a total distance of 252,756 miles.

While there have been creative images shared with me, of images of the Chabad of the dark side of the Moon, this journey is one of tremendous meaning and inspiration on so many levels.

When the Apollo 8 mission first orbited the moon in 1968, the Lubavitcher Rebbe reflected on several powerful lessons. One of the ideas which he shared was how rockets rely on massive fuel tanks, but once their job is done, those tanks are released. Wh… Read More »

Seder Recap

Thank you to the 80+ who joined us for the Community Passover Seder on the first evening of Passover. The room was packed and atmosphere was a beautiful one of inspiration, community, stories, melodies and tradition.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen, with setup, support and sponsorships, security, shopping and so much more.

Passover Photos, Updates & Message

Dear Friends,

In just a few hours we will all be sitting around the Seder Tables with our loved ones, friends, and community, and at Chabad with 80 participants at the community Seder this evening.

The messages of Passover with its timeless message of faith, hope, resilience and miracles, is as relevant as ever.

As our friends and family in Israel found ways to celebrate the Passover Seder in between sirens, braving walks to neighbors, sirens midway in the four questions, but surely with a determination as they said the prayer of Vehee SheAmda, in each generation they rise up to destroy us.

Now more than ever, we need to take the time on Passover to count the miracles and blessings that have been happening, even as we … Read More »

Hundreds Enjoy Model Matzah Bakeries

In the days leading up to Passover, hundreds of children have enjoyed Model Matzah Bakery events that Chabad of Sudbury has hosted right here in Sudbury and in Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley and the New England Hebrew Academy in Brookline.

Dressed in bakers hats and aprons, the children help remove the grain from the wheat, as they learn the story of Passover, and then proceed to grind the grains, make flour, and make a dough and then shape and roll a Matzah, and punch lots of holes in it before they bake their very own Matzah.

Thank you to everyone who helped out and volunteered at these events and helped bring so much to to so many children.

The feedback from parents, teachers and students from this event is tre… Read More »

My Parents House was Egged!

My parents in London, UK, woke up Sunday Morning to discover that eggs had been thrown all over their house. Pretty much every window and part of the house had been egged, and of course their cars too.

The Police and the Jewish Community Security Trust were over there on Sunday morning going over footage and got a good look at the four teens who were surveying the house at 2:30am in the morning, before egging it.

Their beautiful large Mezuzah on their door may have been an added attraction for the teens to egg the house and especially all over the door, but although it is assumed to be the case, it is not yet confirmed.

Thankfully, my wonderful nephew Levi, managed to power wash everything and by Sunday afternoon it was all gone.&nb… Read More »

Why did she Refuse Payment?

The young lady on the phone with me in Tel Aviv was helping prepare the orders of toys in between the sirens. Finally it was time to pay and the lady refused to take the payment for the delivery charge. I asked her to let us pay, but she responded, "no, this is so moving, I would like to do my part for this too".

I never met the lady, I don't even know her name, but she loved the fact, that a community across the world, was trying to help young Israeli children running in and out of bomb shelters, and told us how touched she was and wanted to be a part of this.

VaYakhel, is the them of the weekly portion, as Moshe gathers together the Jewish people, and conveys to them many important instructions and ideas. Vayakhel, means gathe… Read More »

Purim Recap among the Challenges

There is so much happening in the world right now, our brothers and sisters are under intense missile fire from multiple fronts, our family members and friends are in shelters, and Israel and the US are at war with Iran and its proxies.

A young employee of Sudbury Police who serves in the US Armed Forces was injured and we pray for his recovery, as we pray for this to end soon, and for an end to evil, and true peace between all people.

Yet, here in Sudbury, how do we celebrate Purim with so much happening and so much pain and concern?

Yet more than ever, Purim and its profound message of salvation from evil decrees, and for a quick turnaround from crazy situations, along with its message of the Jewish people's strengthening and a… Read More »

One Couple's Powerful Story

In this week's portion we read about the kindling of the flames of the Menorah, also representing the soul of man, which is the flame of G-d.

Please read this powerful article below from the daughter of Natan Sharansky, which tells in a most powerful way, the story of just how powerful a soul can be, and how much light it can add.

*Message from Rachel Sharansky Danziger*…

Forty years ago today, my father, *Natan Sharansky*, crossed Glienicke Bridge and stepped into the free world. On that same day, he was reunited with my mother, Avital Sharansky, in a small room in an airport in Frankfurt after 12 years of forced separation, boarded a plane to Israel, landed into a national celebration, and finished his day a… Read More »

Increasing Happiness

In the book "Happiest Man on Earth", Eddi Jaku who lived through the horrors of Buchenwald and Auschwitz, writes "I promised when I came out of the darkest hours of my life that I would be happy for the rest of my life and smile, because if you smile, the world smiles with you"

He also wrote "Happiness is the only thing in the world that doubles each time you share it".

Happiness & Joy are a crucial part of life and are emphasized tremendously in Jewish teachings, including in verses in the Torah, Talmudic teachings and especially emphasized in Chassidic teachings.

"Joy breaks all barriers." - Source Fourth Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer
