Faith & Pain with Hope & Happiness

Today I saw a powerful clip of former hostage Eli Sharabi being interviewed by Channel 12 in Israel. Eli discovered his wife and children had been murdered only once he was released and also came out looking gaunt and completely malnourished.

In the interview Eli states, that although he considered himself completely secular and someone who never prayed at all, in captivity from the first day he was taken hostage, he would say the first line of Shema Yisrael, every single day.

He describes how this line gave him hope and faith and an awareness that a higher force was looking after him and watching him even in the tunnels of Gaza.

So many of those coming back home, are coming back with terribly painful and tragic … Read More »

THE ORANGE BALLOONS SENT TO HEAVEN

I was in Crown Heights, Brooklyn for a short visit and just returned to Sudbury.

Like everyone else, we are processing the terrible and devastating news.

Yesterday I was with my young daughter the whole day, so I was keeping my emotions to myself.

As we walked around, we saw a group of women and girls, who were mothers and siblings of hostages, that have come to New York to join and be a part of the Chabad Shluchot convention.

They stood on Eastern Parkway, the main road in the neighborhood, with sweatshirts with the names of their loved ones who are still being held hostage.

They were all holding orange balloons for the Bibas family and then did a prayer together with multiple Chabad Rebbitzens and Shluchot, and sent the ballo… Read More »

SHABBAT CANDLESTICKS FROM THE HOLOCAUST MAKE THEIR WAY BACK TO A NEW HOME WHERE THEY CAN BE LIT ONCE AGAIN

SHABBAT CANDLESTICKS FROM THE HOLOCAUST MAKE THEIR WAY BACK TO A NEW HOME WHERE THEY CAN BE LIT ONCE AGAIN

Dan was born in 1940 in Holland, and he just came by ChabadSudbury to bring us these two Silver Candlesticks, which his mother had bought in an antique store in Holland shortly after the Second World War.

He recently realized that they have Hebrew words engraved on them "להדליק נר של שבת","to light the candle of Shabbat" (from the Shabbat Candle Lighting Blessing), and realized that maybe they had once belonged to a Jewish family in the Holocaust and may have been looted during the war.

As he realized this, he thought that it was time for these Candlesticks to return home to the Jewish community… Read More »

The next class will be held this Tuesday along with refreshments and will explore the role and history of the Mishna, the work that the Talmud is built on.

Who will win this Game?

The supporters of both sides are already cheering and shouting, who will prevail remains to be seen. We will find out soon...

No, not politics, but the Superbowl...

As the game unfolds and tens of millions of people are watching 22 players from each team do their best to win the game.

The comments will get louder, there will be cheering for the other team, and a fair deal of criticism and compliments to for various players doing different moves.

The players cannot listen to the comments, roaring crowds, TV Sports Commentators or the louder cheering for other teams or players. They have one job to do, to stay completely present and focused on playing and winning the game.

Life may not be a Superbowl, but we a… Read More »
