18 Hours in Brooklyn

I just returned from an eighteen hour trip to Brooklyn where I spent some time at our annual conference. G-d willing I plan to go back after Shabbos and will join some of the main events and sessions at the conclusion of the conference.

This morning as I walked up Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights, one could literally feel Shabbat in the air. Bouquets of flowers were being sold by the dozen, the smell of freshly baked Challah wafted out of the bakeries, musicians were playing in various spots on the street, booths raising funds for needy families or other causes were set up outside popular stores, groups of friends could be seen having joyful reunions as they saw each other for the first time in two years, and every s… Read More »

Between Sodom & Jerusalem

One of my favorite roads in Israel, is the scenic Route 1 in the area between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. Within a matter of minutes, one leaves the built-up rolling hills and mountains of Jerusalem and descends into the sandy and rocky peaks of the Judean desert.

The difference in the landscape is stark and dramatic, as the often lush greenery of Jerusalem recedes into the back mirror and is replaced by the barren, rocky and sandy hills of the Judean desert. An occasional deer or ibex will be seen running up a rocky cleft, and here and there a piece of greenery will appear in a Wadi, reminding us that even here there is the potential for life.

As one drives a little further, one reaches the Dead Sea at one of the lowest points … Read More »

Captain Kirk & Abraham

At 90 years old, William Shatner also known as Captain Kirk just became the oldest person to fly to space. The entire flight took just over ten minutes, as they ascended to an altitude of nearly 66 miles and spent a few minutes observing earth during the microgravity phase of the flight.

Shatner was very moved by the experience as he stated when he landed, "What you have given me is the most profound experience I can imagine. I'm so filled with emotion about what just happened ... it's extraordinary,"

Space travel aside, the idea of continuing to journey on to new horizons no matter the age and time of life, is one that is inspiring, meaningful and incredibly important.

In fact, the very first word that was told to Abra… Read More »

The Beauty of a single Leaf

Yesterday I was in Brookline and I stopped to pick up a beautiful maple leaf to observe it's beauty. As I looked at the leaf, I was amazed to see how much detail and richness there could be within one simple leaf. The sun rays shone through the trees on to this beautiful leaf and made its colors shine even brighter.

I was reminded that what I am seeing was simply a miniscule reflection of the innate beauty and potential that is in abundance in the world around us,

I am also reminded of another leaf that we read about in this week's Torah portion, as we read how Noah sent a dove from the Ark as the waters receded to see if it could find anything, A short while later the dove returns carrying a single fresh leaf from … Read More »

Sukkos & Simchat Torah Report & Photos

The celebrations of Sukkot & Simchat Torah continued through most of this week, with a beautiful teen Sukkot celebration on Saturday evening (photos), a fun day at Hebrew School with tons of great Sukkot activities and games and then a Sukkot Family event on Sunday afternoon (photos).

Of course this was all followed by the great celebrations and dancing on the last days of the Chag with the Simchat Torah Celebration.

It was a truly beautiful sight to see so many dozens of adults and children show up to celebrate the holiday of Simchat Torah and dance with the Torah and of course the inflatable Torahs and Flags. The awesome Deli Buffet and great food certainly added to the evening and complete a truly wonderful celebr… Read More »
