The Chabad Center of Sudbury invites you to a fascinating interactive Lecture and Presentation on the topic of Spirituality & Mental Health which will be delivered by Dr. David Rosmarin this Thursday evening Jan 31st.
Even in this ostensibly secular age, more than eight in ten people worldwide identify with a religious group (Pew Research Center, 2010), and more than nine in ten Americans profess at least some level of belief in God or a higher power (Gallup Poll, 2011). Furthermore, consistent research highlights that spirituality/religion can have both positive and negative effects on mental health, and that it is very common for individuals to turn to this domain in coping with distress (Pargament, Koenig & Perez, 2000). For these and other reasons, the majority of psychotherapy patients profess a desire to discuss spirituality with their clinicians (Rose, Westefeld, & Ansley, 2001). However, the vast majority of clinicians do not fully appreciate the relevance of spirituality to mental health, and as a result this important aspect of life is often ignored in the treatment of individuals with mental distress. This talk will discuss the relationship between spirituality and mental health from the vantage point of clinical science.
About Dr. Rosmarin
David H. Rosmarin, PhD, ABPP is director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He supervises the provision of spiritually-integrated services in clinical units throughout McLean’s divisional structure, and collaborates with laboratories to study the clinical relevance of spirituality to anxiety, mood, psychotic, substance use, and other disorders. Dr. Rosmarin is a board-certified psychologist and a prolific researcher who has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications, 100 scientific abstracts, and a recent book entitled Spirituality, Religion & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A Guide for Clinicians (Guilford Press, 2018). His work has received media attention from ABC, NPR, Scientific American, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times.
